Camilla: After the odyssey described in The End of All Things, Lissa Bryan shows us Carly, Justin, their daughter and assorted human and animal zoo living in Colby, the isolated town where they are trying to build a future for themselves and other survivors, after the epidemic that cancelled most of the population and destroyed civilization.
What is particularly lovely is the pioneer flavor of the story. The reader is enthralled by the discovery of ancient skills, and wonders how he would cope if thrown in a similar situation. Life is hard in the community, resources scarce and the commodities we are used today don’t exist. However, with love and reciprocal help, it is possible to go on and hope.
Raum: I really appreciate that, even in the darkest moments, Lissa can find the way for her characters to hope. It happened in The End of All Things, and it still happens in The Land of the Shadow. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, and Lissa is great at finding and showing it.
Camilla: But things as they used to be more than a century ago can’t be the same. The present is tainted by the dregs of the vanished past. Among what is left of mankind there are criminals, ganged up to steal and kill. Despite the swamps and the crocs surrounding it, Colby is in danger. It is an undeclared war, but war all the same.
Will the harsh decisions she has to make change Carly inside? Do words like democracy and human rights mean something still?
Raum: We still have to wait for the answers to these questions. Lissa writes so well that it didn’t take long to reach the end of the book! Mix a captivating plot and a flawless writing style, and you have a pure Lissa Bryan’s novel! I hope she’s already penning the next installment of this great dystopian series!
